My Project was at the stage of being a Typology study that needed to join typology and image manipulation, I had decided on the holodeck theme having been inspired by the idea of a back story and the need to place the typology into an alternative reality to make the typology stand out.
I was listening to the radio on the way home from dropping my wife off at work in the morning and the talk show was talking about smoking bans and the idea that the government wanted to ban e-cigarettes in public too, the debate got onto the fact that Pubs had beed declining fast since the original smoking ban, and there was some argument about whether it was the smoking ban or the availability of cheap alcohol in supermarkets.
The debate got me thinking about the decline in things, I had done a project on hard times in A5 of TAOP. Many of the photographers I have researched both for DPP and TAOP were concerned with things disappearing, Eugene Atget spent his time photographing the vanishing streets of Paris, much of which did not actually vanish. The work the Bechers did documented buildings and structures that were eventually torn down. When you think about it with the exception of really important buildings like Stone Henge and Buckingham Palace most structures change or are replaced over the century’s.
It had me thinking that pubs would be a great subject for my typology, it ticks the public interest box and is a fairly easy class of building to identify, and despite the decline there are still an awful lot of them.
The following is my working list of pubs and the result of trying to photograph it:
